9 – Extreme Tongue Make Over!
We have all seen the popular show about transforming an average house into an “over the top” extreme home! Boy, we all could use an “extreme mouth makeover!” Can a cool, refreshing spring produce both sweet and bitter water? No! The quality of the water is determined by its’ source. However, most often we are guilty of this in our speech. What we say and how it is said indicates much about the source of our tongue. We all have stories of how we misspoke in a situation or how our words hurt and cut deeply.
Purpose in your heart to build up rather than tear down. It has been well said that if we can’t find something good to say, then say nothing at all. Put that into practice today. Make some adjustments in your speech today and then ask God to “move that bus” for the world to see and hear the new you! What a reveal!
James 3:9-11
9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
Pray – Ask God to help you in what you say today. Ask Him to give you opportunities to “build up” rather than “tear down” those around you. Dear God, I know you desire me to honor You in not only my actions, but in my words as well. Help to set a watch over my mouth each day. I want to glorify You by “building up” others, not “tearing them down” with harsh words and criticism. Help me to be known as one who is an encourager, not a criticizer!
Reflection – How did you do today? Write down a few names of individuals who you want to specifically target in regards to encouraging. Are there people you have wronged by your speech? Consider righting that wrong by asking them to forgive you.
